Head of Technology

HiDef Aerial Surveying Limited is an environmental services company which uses technology to provide solutions for its clients. Established in 2007, HiDef was first to market in providing digital aerial surveys of marine wildlife in the UK and has since grown to become the market leader providing its services across Europe. In 2016, HiDef formed a partnership with German company BioConsult SH and took on a wider environmental consultancy service for its clients.

Technology lies at the heart of HiDef’s services and following a growth in business and business opportunities, the company is looking to improve its technological offering for its clients. Instrumental to this is the recruitment of a senior manager on a permanent full-time contract. The role will be to manage operational engineering requirements, the IT department and to manage research and development in the use of new sensor technologies.

The job holder will be report to the Operations Director and will be graded at the level of Associate Director. They will participate in Senior Management meetings and on the Board of Directors as a non-voting member.

The Role

The role will be to:

Manage the different technological aspects of its digital aerial survey operation, including:

  • Maintenance, installation and carrying out diagnostic checks of camera rigs to ensure smooth operation during survey flights;
  • Maintenance of mechanical and electrical drawings to the current equipment configuration;
  • Maintenance and development of installation, pre-flight checks and diagnostic processes and update of user manuals; and
  • Development and implementation of maintenance processes.

Develop, or support development of, the design of the onboard aerial survey equipment and software to improve its robustness;

Management of equipment commissioning processes;

Manage the training of aerial camera operators as required;

Engineering support to sales and project delivery teams;

Manage development of future generations of survey equipment to improve design and take advantage of advances in image sensor technology to give better quality images;

Manage the development of additional technologies designed to offer new services for new or existing clients such as airborne LiDAR;

Keep abreast of developments in sensor technologies and understand their potential application to environmental services;

Manage the IT services team to ensure seamless delivery of computer networks, hardware/server infrastructure, software applications, information security, IT assets, internet services and assets and front line IT support for staff.

Oversight of quality, health, safety and environmental management of staff working under their control;

Provide technological input to all relevant aspects of the Company’s operations;

Integrate with and provide technical support for our sister company BioConsult SH in Germany;

Provide input to Senior Management meetings and as a non-voting member of the Board of Directors; and

Be prepared to travel as required, including internationally for periods of time.

Qualifications and competencies

The successful candidate should have all of the essential competencies and many or most of the following desirable competencies


Degree-level in a technological subject such as physics or engineering, ideally covering sensor systems (highly desirable)

At least four years of relevant work experience (essential)

Personal competencies

Good organisational and work planning skills (essential)

Good problem-solving skills (essential)

Have a ‘can-do’ attitude and drive to ‘get the job done’ (essential)

Willing to take responsibility (essential)

Have good oral and written communication skills including ability to write concise papers for the board (essential)


Good knowledge of sensor systems ideally including photographic or video camera systems; (essential)

Good knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems (desirable)

Good knowledge of light aircraft (desirable)

Good knowledge of IT systems (desirable)


Have at least two years’ experience managing staff (essential)

Have experience of managing the quality, health, safety and environmental control of reporting staff (desirable)
